Horace is one of the Poets of Limbo, offering a critical-damage-focused spear deck once rescued. Her rescue quest triggers automatically on your third Limbo run when the timer hits 3:30. You must reach her location and defend her from enemy waves before 5:45. Failure retries on subsequent runs until you succeed.
Prerequisites and When the Quest Triggers
The Horace rescue quest requires exactly your third Limbo run — not your third run overall if you have attempted other Circles. The quest activates when the stage timer reaches 3:30, displayed as a quest marker on your mini-map. Open the map with Tab to see Horace's location and the route you need to take.
You do not need to have defeated Minos or unlocked Virgil before attempting the Horace quest, though most players will have Virgil's deck available by their third run. The quest triggers regardless of your current build or Poet selection.
If you have already completed two Limbo runs in the demo, note that demo progress does not transfer to Early Access. You will need to complete two Limbo runs in EA before the Horace quest appears on your third attempt.
Quest Timeline: 3:30 to 5:45
At 3:30, a notification appears and Horace's icon marks her position on the mini-map. She is located in the northern section of Limbo's map, accessible through the central crossroads. Stop farming experience and path directly toward her — you have just over two minutes to reach her before the defense phase begins.
Upon reaching Horace, a defense sequence starts. Enemy waves spawn targeting her directly. Horace has her own health bar separate from yours. If Horace's health reaches zero before you clear the waves, the quest fails. Your Poet's death also fails the quest.
The defense phase must complete before 5:45. If the timer passes 5:45 during the defense, the quest fails even if Horace is still alive. Speed and efficient pathing during the 3:30–5:45 window are critical — do not detour for vases or elites on quest runs.
- 3:30 — Quest triggers, Horace marker appears on mini-map
- 3:30–~4:30 — Travel phase: path directly to Horace's location
- 4:30–5:45 — Defense phase: protect Horace from enemy waves
- 5:45 — Hard deadline; quest fails if defense is not complete
Defense Phase Strategy
During the defense, position yourself between Horace and the spawning enemies. Your weapons auto-target the nearest threat, so staying close to Horace ensures your attacks intercept enemies before they reach her. AOE weapons like Dragon's Breath or Selenic Bloom handle the swarm waves efficiently.
Elites spawn during the defense phase with higher priority targeting on Horace. Focus fire elites first — they deal burst damage that can eliminate Horace in seconds if ignored. Spell tokens are valuable here; save at least one for the defense phase to clear a dense wave.
Dash is essential for intercepting fast enemies that slip past your weapon range. Watch Horace's health bar at the top of the screen and prioritize the side enemies are attacking from, even if it means leaving experience orbs uncollected.
Best Build for the Horace Quest
Run a high-AOE build for the rescue quest. Dante's Dragon's Breath with Spread Mods clearing adjacent weapons is the safest choice. Virgil's Selenic Bloom works equally well if unlocked. Avoid single-target or slow-attack builds that cannot clear swarms quickly enough.
Charm priorities: Attack Speed and any AOE amplification charms. Growth is less valuable on quest runs because you stop farming experience at 3:30. Consider saving rerolls in case Beatrice offers something useful before the quest trigger at level 7.
After rescuing Horace, her spear-themed Weapon and Mod Cards appear in your level-up pool on all future runs. See the Horace Poet Guide and Critical Damage Build Guide for post-rescue build planning.
What Happens If You Fail
Quest failure does not lock you out. If Horace dies, you die, or the 5:45 deadline passes, the quest simply does not complete for that run. On your next Limbo attempt, the quest triggers again at 3:30 with the same requirements.
Failed quest runs still count as completed Limbo runs for other unlock purposes. Your third failed Horace attempt still means your fourth run is not another Horace quest trigger — the quest only appears once per run starting from run three.
Use failed attempts to learn the path to Horace's location. The northern route has narrow passages where enemies cluster — knowing these chokepoints in advance makes your first successful rescue much smoother.
