Virgil, Dante's guide through the Divine Comedy, is the second Poet of Limbo available in Hell Maiden. His star-themed deck introduces moon weapons and AOE abilities like Selenic Bloom and Cradle of Stars. Unlocking Virgil requires only two Limbo runs — win or lose — making him the easiest Poet to access after Dante.
How to Unlock Virgil: Step by Step
Complete your first Limbo run. This can end in victory against Minos, death during the survival phase, or death during the boss fight — the outcome does not matter. Return to the Forum after the run ends.
Start and complete your second Limbo run. Again, success or failure both count. After the second run concludes, Virgil's deck is permanently unlocked. A notification confirms the unlock when you return to the Forum.
On your third run and all subsequent runs, Virgil's star-themed Weapon and Mod Cards appear in your level-up pool alongside Dante's fire cards. You select which Poet's cards to pick during each level-up — both pools are available, but individual card offers belong to one Poet or the other.
- Run 1 — Complete any Limbo attempt (win or lose)
- Run 2 — Complete a second Limbo attempt (win or lose)
- Run 3+ — Virgil's cards appear in level-up pool permanently
Virgil's Card Pool Overview
Virgil's deck centers on star and moon themes with strong AOE capabilities. Selenic Bloom is his signature area damage weapon, creating expanding star bursts that clear swarm waves. Cradle of Stars provides sustained orbital damage around your Poet, excellent for defensive play during dense enemy phases.
Moon-themed Mod Cards complement the star weapons with cooldown reduction and projectile count bonuses. Spread Mods on Virgil's weapons buff adjacent Dante fire cards if you run a hybrid hand layout, though most players commit fully to one Poet per run.
For detailed card stats and synergies, see the Virgil Poet Guide and the Virgil Star Build Guide. The Decks Overview compares all Poet pools side by side.
When to Play Virgil Instead of Dante
Virgil excels at burst AOE and elite deletion. If your Dante runs struggle with elite waves after the 8:00 mark, switching to Virgil's Selenic Bloom build often solves the problem. Star weapons deal concentrated damage in smaller areas compared to Dante's wide fire trails, making Virgil better for players who prefer positional play.
Dante remains stronger for beginners due to forgiving fire AOE that does not require precise positioning. Unlock Virgil after your second run, experiment on run three, and compare your clear times. Many players alternate between Poets depending on whether they need sustained clear (Dante) or burst damage (Virgil).
Virgil is not required for the Horace rescue quest on run three — you can attempt Horace's defense with either Poet's cards. However, Virgil's AOE is well-suited for the defense phase, making run three a natural first Virgil attempt.
Demo vs Early Access Unlock
If you played the Hell Maiden demo, your demo runs do not count toward Virgil's unlock in Early Access. Demo progress does not transfer to the full game. You will need two fresh Limbo runs after the July 16, 2026 Early Access launch.
The demo included only Limbo with limited card pools. Early Access adds Lust, Homer, Ovid, and expanded Mod Cards. Virgil's unlock requirement remains two Limbo runs in both versions, but the card pool available after unlock is larger in EA.
See the Early Access Release Information page for full details on what carries over and what is new at launch.
Poet Unlock Progression Path
Hell Maiden's Poet unlocks follow a natural progression: Dante (default), Virgil (2 runs), Horace (3rd run quest), then Homer and Ovid through Lust Circle questlines in Early Access. Each rescued Poet permanently expands your card pool.
Unlocking Virgil early is recommended because his cards provide a meaningfully different playstyle without complex quest requirements. Two runs is a low investment that immediately diversifies your build options for Limbo and future Circles.
After Virgil, focus on the Horace rescue quest on your third run to add critical damage builds to your roster before entering Lust in Early Access.
