Each Poet of Limbo contributes a distinct card pool to your level-up drafts. Dante's fire weapons prioritize sustained AOE; Virgil's star cards excel at mobile clears; Horace's spears scale with critical damage; Homer and Ovid expand options in Early Access Lust content. Choosing which poets to unlock — and how to combine their cards within a single run — defines your long-term progression through Hell Maiden's Circles.
Dante — Fire Deck (Available from Run One)
Dante is your default poet and the most beginner-friendly pool. Fire weapons like Dragon's Breath, Erichtho's Rite, and Blistering Wake provide immediate wave clear without complex positioning. Fire Spread mods amplify neighboring weapons when stacked in adjacent hand slots.
Dante mods lean toward burn stacking, attack speed Boosts, and ground-effect Duration Effects. The deck lacks burst crit scaling but compensates with consistent damage uptime that carries inexperienced players through Limbo's twelve-minute timer. Most first Minos kills happen on Dante-focused builds.
See the Dante fire build and Virgil unlock path for progression beyond Dante-only runs. Dante cards remain valuable in hybrid builds even after unlocking other poets.
Virgil — Star Deck (Unlock: Two Limbo Runs)
Virgil's moon and star weapons unlock after completing two Limbo runs regardless of outcome. Selenic Bloom and Cradle of Stars introduce radial AOE and orbiting projectiles that reward mobile playstyles. Star Spread mods create some of the highest AOE ceilings in the game when merged to level 3.
Virgil excels during dense wave events and Lust Circle content where spawn rates exceed Limbo baseline. Star weapons trade slightly lower boss single-target DPS for superior trash mob handling. Pair Virgil weapons with Dante fire Spreads for hybrid builds that dominate the tier list mid-game.

Horace — Spear Deck (Unlock: Third-Run Rescue Quest)
Horace requires completing a timed rescue quest on your third Limbo run. The quest triggers at 3:30; you must reach and defend Horace before 5:45. Her spear weapons — led by Blade of Augustus — scale with critical chance and critical damage charms.
Horace's pool introduces piercing attacks and crit-proc Mod Cards absent from Dante and Virgil pools. The deck underperforms in early Limbo before crit stats accumulate but becomes dominant in Lust against high-health elites and sub-boss Scarmiglione. Review the rescue guide before your third attempt.
The Horace spear build and crit build guide cover charm priorities and mod selections for maximum crit uptime.
Homer and Ovid — Early Access Expansions
Homer unlocks through Lust Circle progression and brings epic-themed weapons with wide arc attacks suited for crowd control in the second Circle's tighter arenas. His cards complement Virgil AOE layouts and provide alternatives when star mods fail to merge during a run.
Ovid introduces transformation-themed Miracle and Curse mods with high-risk, high-reward proc effects. Ovid cards shine in experienced hands with optimized charm setups but frustrate beginners who pick Curse mods without mitigation. See Homer and Ovid poet pages for Lust-specific unlock requirements.
Early Access ships with four poets fully playable across Limbo and Lust. AstralShift plans additional poets aligned with future Circles of Hell during the roughly one-year Early Access period before full 1.0 release.
Mixing Poet Cards in One Run
Hell Maiden allows cross-poet weapon and mod combinations within a single run. The most popular hybrid pairs Dante fire with Virgil star — Dragon's Breath for sustained damage plus Selenic Bloom for AOE bursts during elite waves. Spread mods determine whether hybrid layouts gain full or partial cross-element bonuses.
Avoid mixing more than two poet identities unless mods are merged on both primary weapons. Three-poet runs dilute merge progress and leave multiple weapons at level 1 mods when boss phases demand level 3 power. Commit to two poets maximum until you consistently clear Lust.
Use the deck builder tool to preview hand layouts before runs. Testing Spread adjacency with your planned poet combination prevents wasted level-ups on incompatible mod placements.
